Interactions, group work, and cooperative learning are all important concepts that are often discussed and promoted amongst teachers and educators. But Why are they important?
After reading Learning & Teaching by Kauchak & Eggen chapters seven, eight, nine, ten, and eleven, along with the related TExES competencies seven and nine, I feel confident in my knowledge on the importance of these concepts. I learned that teaching and learning in groups can foster interactive discussions that are useful for guided discovery as well as problem-based learning.
As I learned in the previous chapters, learning and teaching are closely related and affect one another. Chapter seven presented information on the importance of teaching and learning in groups. As a student, I believe that social interactions and group activities are the most effective in learning. After familiarizing myself with the information in this chapter, I understood that teachers accomplish two goals during these activities and projects. These collaborative activities foster learning of content in addition to the development of social and interactive skills. These skills are very useful even when a student is out of the classroom. Interactive and cooperative skills play a big role in one’s career field and life success.
After completing my study of the chapters, I realized that lectures do not have to be boring and ineffective. Interactive instruction can promote learning and open the door for great discussions in the classroom. I found this information closely related to the information in chapter ten.
As a future teacher, I find this information very helpful. I realized that teachers can present information in an interactive and captivating way that keeps students interested and motivated to understand the content. Once students are interested in gaining knowledge, they are likely to cooperatively work towards answering a particular question or problem.
To sum up, these chapter and competencies were all related to indispensable skills children need to acquire both personally and cooperatively. I found this information very informative and useful in the future. Also, I discovered and studied effective strategies that implement skills needed academically, practically, and professionally.
