“What is good teaching?” A question we often try to answer in a very simple and easy way but soon find it almost impossible to define in a few words. Being a teacher means taking on many roles and responsibilities that go beyond presenting a lesson. After reading Learning & Teaching by Kauchak & Eggen chapters one, two, three and the competencies, I feel that I am a step closer to finding my teaching philosophy and strategies that I will implement in my future classroom. In my opinion, effective teaching is showcased when effective learning is taking place.
As a future teacher, I feel the need to educate myself on other ethnicities and cultures. Being culturally aware plays a big role in introducing and welcoming diversity in my classroom. As competency 002 from the pedagogy and professional responsibilities states, teachers should be able to effectively plan learning experiences and assessments that are responsive to differences and diversity.
After reading this information, I realized that respecting others’ culture is important, but effectively teaching students from various backgrounds is a lot more complex. In chapter 2, I learned that multicultural education examines ways and strategies that can use the students’ cultures to complement and enhance learning. For example, in my future classroom, I plan on having books from various cultures available in my classroom library. I believe this will help introduce culture, traditional folktales, as well as diversity to the classroom while accomplishing my teaching goals. Welcoming diversity is one of the key ingredients to effective teaching.
When I think of cultural diversity I cannot help but relate it to learning diversity and multiple intelligences. Students bring their experiences and their backgrounds to the classroom as well as their unique minds and thoughts. Learning the multiple intelligences and ways to accommodate students accordingly has helped me a lot. Effective learning will occur in various ways based on the children’s abilities and intelligences.
In my future classroom, I will apply all of the information learned from the chapters and competencies. First, I will be sure to introduce and celebrate diversity and differences. We all differ from one another in a beautiful and unique way. When students learn to appreciate differences and welcome change, they are more likely to succeed not just academically but socially and within society.
In addition, I will have various ways of presenting information to my students. I will accommodate my students that are new to the country and still learning not just the language but the culture as well.
Last but not least, I will be responsive the students’ developmental processes and plan instructions and assessments accordingly. I will teach to the students and their intelligences and not to the tests.
