Why is planning important when it comes to teaching? Well, after reading Learning & Teaching by Kauchak & Eggen chapters four, five, six and the TExES competencies three, four, and eight, I learned a lot of important concepts for being an effective teacher and creating successful learning environment.
Chapter four had many important facts and so much information that is very useful to me as a future teacher. As a college student, I enjoy certain classes while I dread others. Following the reading, I now believe that teachers play a big role in students’ success and understanding even before stepping foot in the classroom. Chapter five presented some valuable information on effective teaching and the characteristics of an effective teacher. I believe that planning and effective teaching go hand in hand with increasing learning through student involvement, covered in chapter six.
I realized that the reason I did not necessarily enjoy certain classes was not due to unpleasant content, but due the lack of preparedness of the professor. When a professor walks through the door, I expect them to provide great information as well as instruction to further expand my knowledge and application of the new information. As a future teacher, I learned that in order to truly help my students learn, I owe them a full effective lesson, which requires time and dedication. In the future, I will always prepare my lesson and my guided discussions in order to effectively lead discussion and effective learning.
In addition, Chapter five discusses technology and teaching, which I found very interesting. In today’s world, technology is becoming part of our everyday lives. It is very important for teachers to stay up-to-date with technology, for it can be a great resource when used correctly. For example, there are many applications and programs that will help in organizing, collecting, and saving data.
Furthermore, as a future teacher, I learned the importance of ending a lesson effectively. It is always recommended to have students work in groups and share information amongst themselves. With that said, things can get off track sometimes and it is the effective teacher’s responsibility to acknowledge the concepts that students are sharing while bringing them back on topic and ending the discussions and lessons effectively in order for the student to truly learn and store the information properly and effectively.
To conclude, I benefited immensely from reading chapters four, five, and six as well as the related competencies. I will use this information in my future career and I will apply this great deal of strategies and tips in my future classroom. My goal is to plan a lesson that teaches children the information effectively, while practicing effective teaching and increasing student involvement in the classroom to truly raise a successful and ambitious generation that enjoys learning.
